There is not any flipping, tricking or fighting. What to bring? - Notebooks are provided. - Wear comfortable athletic training gear or full uniform preferably black so we can all match. - Bring water and any snacks you prefer - Bring two hand pads/mitts or your Instructor Training bag with kick paddles and mitts/hand targets. Who to bring? Anyone you want to assist and teach classes at your school. Attendees leave inspired and ready to empower every member while assisting and teaching powerful classes. Developing a World Class Staff Part I It’s important to remember that your staff members are still students! That may seem obvious, but my experience in working with school owners for the past 28 years tells me different. For some reason, one of the mistakes I’ve noticed is when a school owner hires a staff member, they change the dynamic of the relationship. They begin treating the staff member like an employee and no longer like a student. Why? Because of OUR past experience of being an employee. We think have previous conditioning as to what an employee is. But the dynamic you have with your students is different. You have a past relationship with them, and this relationship should grow and change, but not be different in nature. You have to remember; your staff are still students, they are now students at a different level. Instead of learning your style, they are now learning how to be a teacher, or Program Director, etc. Everything should remain the same. You should still be caring , encouraging, patient, etc., etc. For some reason, I have noticed that when a school owner hires a staff member, THEY become different. They expect versus guide. They become less patient and more pressured. This is a mistake. You have to remember - you are a teacher. Whether you are teaching someone Kung Fu or how to be a program director, your nature should never change. More tomorrow in part 2. I hope to see you at Instructor Training 2022. Developing a World Class Staff Part II As far as I see it, there are 3 levels in developing staff; Staff Recruiting, Staff Training / Development and Staff Mentoring. Let’s begin with Staff Recruiting (I’ll keep this brief). First, the best advice I was ever given: DIG YOUR WELL BEFORE YOUR THIRSTY!! There are times when I get a phone call from an owner who is in crisis management because they lost a staff member and have no one on deck. This is a gross oversight. You need to have bench strength. I was once asked by an owner where I find all our staff. I asked him how many Black Belts where training at his school. He proudly explained that his Black Belt class was one of his largest classes. I asked him how he got so many Black Belts? The reason why he as so many Black Belts is because his school is a BLACK BELT SCHOOL. That’s why he has so many black belts. The purpose of his school is to train and develop Black Belts. His staff is taught how to develop and recruit students for Black Belt training. Staff development is the same; you simply change the focus of your mind from just recruiting and training students for Black Belt, to recruiting and training students to be instructors. If it’s that simple, why don’t more people do it? I have found what stops most owners is curriculum; they don’t know what to teach in a leadership / staff development class. I’ll cover that on the next article and at the Instructor Training 2022. I want to see you there.
