Background Information:
Can you provide a brief overview of your martial arts school, including its size, location, and the martial arts disciplines you offer?
Our School was always just a Karate School, teaching Shito Ryu Karate. For the first 30 years, it was more of a Club than a professional business Dojo. In the last year we have added Krav Maga for the adults.
Goals and Objectives:
What specific goals and objectives did you have in mind when you decided to work with Greg Silva Coaching?
I didn’t, other than to improve my Dojo. I knew that I had spent years seemingly spinning wheels where growth was concerned, and wanted to improve.
Coaching Engagement:
How did the coaching process unfold, and for how long did you receive coaching?
I started with an associate of Master Silva, Bill. I was not happy with his style of coaching, and ended up stopping. Master Silva contacted me a short time after, and I really liked his way of approaching my Dojo.
Results and Achievements:
Can you provide concrete examples of how enrollment, member retention, revenue, or other key performance indicators improved?
I was at about $9,000 or $10,000 per month gross, and ran 85 to 100 students when I hired Master Silva. Now we average $40,000 plus per month gross and have around 250 students.
Implementation of Strategies:
Which coaching strategies or recommendations did you find most effective in achieving your goals?
Probably the most profound words I heard from Master Silva were that he didn’t care what style or type of Martial Arts we taught. His idea was to teach me the best way of PRESENTING whatever I taught. At that stage of my improving, that was what I needed most to hear. It made me MUCH more receptable to his working with me. The second most profound words were that I needed to be monthly aware of my business stats.
Challenges and Overcoming Obstacles:
Were there any obstacles or challenges encountered during the coaching process, and how were they addressed?
I hate change, and am terrified of change. That was always my biggest obstacle. Master Silva was fantastic at working me through that.
Impact on Staff and Culture:
Were there any notable changes in staff performance, morale, or teamwork?
Yes! Little by little, my studying Master Silvas way of presenting material filtered off to my instructors, and my Dojo has prospered most from that. Then my head instructor started following Master Silva, and staff morale and teamwork has blossomed.
Feedback on Greg Silva Coaching:
What were your overall impressions of working with Greg Silva Coaching and Greg himself?
Master Silva is a “no nonsense” leader. He puts the ideas out there, and if I don’t want to do something, he always had another dojo that WAS doing it to provide me contact with. Seeing the other dojo being successful made me more malleable to change. Master Silva is easy to talk to, and always has an answer. I very much enjoy our conversations, though recently its more with my Head Instructor.
How would you describe the coaching style and approach?
Laid back presentation of great material and direction.
Advice for Others:
What advice or recommendations would you offer to other martial arts school owners who are considering coaching services?
I think this is a difficult problem, to try to figure out who is best to try? I found out by trial and error, but I think that a dojo owner should try to find several Martial Arts businesses that are successful and see who they are using. I tell all my dojo owner friends that if they are serious about making their school a good business, Master Silva is one of the best known and easiest to work with. Many of them SAY they want to improve, but really don’t.
Future Plans:
What are your plans for the future of your martial arts school, now that you've achieved success through coaching?
Growth! We still have trouble at times with different aspects of Master Silvas systems that we just are not following closely enough. That allows chinks in our system that holds us back. So we continue to work on our systems! Once our Dojo gets to a certain level, it’s time to look at opening a second Dojo or a third. Growth is the goal!
