Who is Greg Silva?
I would like to welcome martial artists, martial arts entrepreneurs and those interested in business and personal excellence to my site.
I have a passion for helping others. I first discovered what I believe is my gift teaching martial arts to children. Back in the 70’s and 80's before the Karate Kid movies, I noticed the power of martial arts training in building life and success skills in children. I felt I possessed a gift of teaching that bordered on simplicity and fun but created a huge impact. Later on I discovered I could enhance and use these same skills in changing martial arts business entrepreneurs. Helping make them be more successful in business while creating innovation and enjoyment in their personal lives.
I was fortunate to be raised by two positive hard working and very success minded parents. At a very young age they began teaching me respect for authority, strong self-esteem and an incredible amount of freedom and trust. They owned a bakery at the time; worked from 4 am until mid afternoon. It wasn’t uncommon to be responsible for myself for hours a day. In summers we had a home at a lake and they would sometimes leave late at night to make breads on the weekends. Living at a lake we had a boat, there was swimming, hiking and all sorts of dangers for a young teen, yet they trusted me to be responsible and trustworthy.
Being entrepreneurs they also taught me financial responsibility: to earn, save and invest money. By the time I was 14 I had road side stands, sold fishing bait at the lake house and saved 1/2 of what I made. The board game of choice in the home was called “Stock Market.” At the age of 13 at this lake house I had a dispute with kids in the neighborhood and had my nose broken. My dad being an ex-boxer got me immediately in martial arts.
My interest in martial arts and knowledge of business made opening a martial arts school a dream. My parents weren’t as sure as I was on this choice, so the rule was laid down that I attend a business college and graduate. After that I was free to follow the dream. In 1973, in the same month that I graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Business, I opened my first school.
During my training, I was a sponge and learned from as many as I could about training and business. At one time I had 5 schools with 2000 combined students and picked up and moved to Florida because I wanted to do something bigger. In Florida I created East West Karate: a single martial arts school of 1200 students. I was a martial arts millionaire by age 40. Soon after creating a martial arts software and billing company, my partner had a stroke. I then went in debt a million dollars to buy the company. Less than three years later I was back bigger than ever. I feel it’s my ability to operate under stress and creativity in these situations that has helped me mentor others to martial arts millionaire status.
On this site I will share some thoughts and concepts I feel might empower others.
